We have an outstanding opportunity for a Legal Adviser with experience in maritime affairs and Law of the Sea in the Oceans and Natural Resources (ONR) section of our Trade, Oceans and Natural Resources Directorate.

The successful candidate will provide legal and policy advice, either individually or as member of a multi-disciplinary ONR Advisory team, to Commonwealth Member countries and regional organisations. Other responsibilities include: providing advice on, and assisting member countries to formulate policies for the facilitation and regulation of private sector investment in natural resource sectors; analysing proposals, recommending negotiating strategies and, where necessary, providing support to Member government teams in negotiations; managing project execution by defining project parameters, reporting on project implementation and monitoring project performance; collaborating with ONR colleagues to develop strategic partnerships and initiatives with multi-lateral and bi-lateral agencies, and maintaining contacts with senior government officials, investors and other international agencies.

To be considered, you must have a first degree and/or relevant post-graduate degree in Law, with a specialisation in aspects of natural resources or public international law. Also required is a minimum of ten years’ experience at a senior level in the practice of the law and leadership of projects related to policy regulation, and/or negotiations relating to the development and exploitation of seabed or other mineral resources, offshore petroleum, and/or Law of the Sea, gained in a government ministry, the private sector or an international organisation.
